Getting started & FAQ

A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR BUDDY

Getting started
& FAQ.

Your first batch, your review page, and what to do when something gets stuck. Everything in one place.

INVENTORY BUDDY BETA

Before you start

Buddy sorts Second Life home and decor items into labeled folders. This beta is still being improved, and mistakes are expected. Check its work on the review page before collecting your folders.

  • A place to rez Buddy. Use land you own or somewhere you’re allowed to put objects down.
  • A web browser. You can review your batch on a computer or phone.
  • Up to 400 items per batch. Start with 20–50 items to learn the process. Buddy will tell you if you add too many.
  • Home and decor items. Furniture, decorations, plants, and building pieces. This version is not built for clothing, hair, skins, or other avatar appearance items.

Getting to the review page usually takes about two minutes or less. If it takes longer, Buddy sends “still working” messages.

Your first batch, step by step

  1. Put Buddy on the ground.

Drag Inventory Buddy from your inventory onto the ground. In Second Life, this is called “rezzing.”

  2. Open Buddy’s contents.

Right-click Buddy, choose Edit, and open the Contents tab.

  3. Drag your items in.

Add the home and decor items you want sorted to the Contents tab. Close the edit window when you’re done.

  4. Open Buddy’s menu.

Click or touch Buddy. A blue menu box appears on your screen.

  5. Choose Analyze.

Buddy looks at the items and groups matching items together. If it asks about exact duplicates and you’re unsure, choose Keep All.

  6. Open your review link.

When Buddy is ready, it sends a private web link in chat. Click it to open your review page. Keep this link private.

  7. Check Buddy’s work.

Look through every group, including confident suggestions. Fix incorrect categories and press Save. Use Don’t Keep for items you want set aside to inspect and discard later.

  8. Press Finish Review.

When you’re done on the website, choose Finish Review. The page will tell you to return to Second Life.

  9. Choose Get Items.

Touch Buddy and choose Get Items. Stay in the same region as Buddy until it says delivery is finished.

  10. Check your new folders.

Make sure everything arrived. Items marked Don’t Keep arrive last in a folder named ~ Don’t Keep. Look through it before deleting anything.

  11. Clear Buddy when you’re done.

After your folders have arrived and you’ve checked them, touch Buddy and choose Clear to prepare the box for your next batch.

Review & sorting

How do I open my review page?

Use the private link Buddy sends in Second Life chat after Analyze. There isn’t a shared review page that opens everyone’s items. If you lose your link, type /77 review in nearby chat to have Buddy send it again.

Why does Buddy put some items in the wrong category?

Buddy mostly goes by item names. Clear names such as “Oak Dining Table” are easier to interpret than codes, store names, or creative names such as “Midnight Whisper.” Creators use different naming styles, languages, abbreviations, and spellings. Words can also have multiple meanings: a “mat” might be a door mat, yoga mat, or bath mat.

Check the suggestions and choose a better category wherever needed. Your saved choice wins.

Do I need to check confident suggestions too?

Yes. A confident suggestion can still be wrong. Look through all the item groups before Finish Review, rather than checking only Unknown or low-confidence items.

What do Unknown and low confidence mean?

Buddy isn’t sure where the items belong. Open the group, look at the item names, choose the most appropriate category, and press Save.

Why are pieces from the same set separated?

Creator information can help Buddy recognize related items, but Second Life doesn’t always share it. Missing creator information and inconsistent names can make sets harder to connect, so related pieces may appear in different groups or folders.

What does Don’t Keep do?

It sets items aside for later inspection. They are delivered last in one folder named ~ Don’t Keep. You decide whether to delete them after looking through that folder.

What happens when I finish my review?

Press Finish Review on the web page, then return to Second Life. Touch Buddy and choose Get Items. Stay in the same region until Buddy confirms delivery is complete.

Delivery & troubleshooting

Something stopped partway. What do I do?

Touch Buddy, choose More, then Resume. Buddy continues from where it stopped and avoids sending the same folders twice. If delivery is in progress, stay in the same region as Buddy.

Buddy is taking longer than two minutes. Is it stuck?

Longer batches can take more time. Buddy sends “still working” messages while it processes. Type /77 status in nearby chat to see what it’s doing. If it has stopped partway, use More → Resume.

When is it safe to choose Clear?

Only after Buddy finishes delivery, your sorted folders arrive, and you’ve checked them. Clear removes the copies in the box to prepare for another batch. It does not delete no-copy items.

How can I get help from the box?

Touch Buddy and choose Help. You can also type /77 status in nearby chat to check the current batch status. For a problem you can’t resolve, contact Ria Ledevre in Second Life.

Good to know

How do I keep track of items I’ve already loaded?

Create numbered inventory folders such as Sent to Sorter 1 and Sent to Sorter 2. After loading a batch, use the next folder to keep track of the source items that remain in your inventory.

Once delivery finishes, compare the sorted folders with your source folders before deleting anything. Check for items you still need, especially anything that was not returned as another copy.

What happens to no-copy items?

Buddy retains no-copy items when you choose Clear. Keep track of these items and confirm where they are before cleaning up your inventory or removing the box.

What if I sort the same items again?

Under the current beta’s 14-day rule, items sorted within the last 14 days are marked Already Sorted and won’t be sent a second time.

How long is my sorting data kept?

Review pages and sorting data are automatically deleted after 14 days under the current beta retention policy.

Can Buddy sort my clothing or hair?

This version is built for home and decor: furniture, decorations, plants, and building pieces. Clothing, hair, skins, and other avatar appearance items are outside its current scope.

Do my corrections help improve Buddy?

Yes. Correcting categories on the review page is useful feedback about where the sorting needs improvement. Buddy is still in beta, and your review helps identify mistakes.
